What 'stores my data' usually means

Most online resume builders store your content on their servers because you create an account and save drafts in the cloud. That is convenient for syncing across devices, but it also means your employment history, contact details, and education records sit on someone else's infrastructure — often tied to marketing analytics and retention policies you may not read.

Some tools also upload your file to score it against job descriptions. Others run export pipelines that copy your JSON or document through backend services. 'Free' tiers may still collect account data even when export is paywalled.

FreeResume.me without an account

When you open /builder/local with no sign-in, your résumé edits live in your browser session and localStorage drafts. We do not create a server-side résumé record for guest users. You can build, preview, and iterate without handing over an email address.

Our ATS checker (/ats-checker) is fully client-side: your PDF and job description are parsed in your browser. Neither file is uploaded to our servers for scoring. That is a meaningful difference from tools that ask you to upload a résumé for analysis.

What happens when you export a PDF

PDF export is not 100% client-side. When you click download, your résumé JSON is sent in a POST request to /api/pdf so we can render a pixel-perfect PDF with Playwright. The response is streamed back to you with Cache-Control: no-store. We do not save that payload as a stored résumé document in your account unless you are signed in and have chosen to save the file.

We will not claim 'your data never touches a server' — that would be inaccurate. We will say: guest editing stays local, ATS analysis stays local, and PDF generation is a transient render — not a permanent server-side draft.

When you choose to create an account

Signing up is optional. If you do, autosave stores your résumés, CVs, and cover letters to your account so you can access them from other devices. You control what is saved and can delete documents. See our Privacy Policy for retention and rights.

How this compares to the industry pattern

Many resume SaaS products require account creation before you can save meaningful work, then place PDF export behind a subscription. That pattern is widespread — we are not alleging every named competitor mishandles data. The structural point is simpler: account-required, server-stored résumés are the default design, and FreeResume.me's guest path is built to avoid that default until you opt in.
