Resume Keywords: How to Optimize for ATS Without Lying (2026)
Applicant Tracking Systems rank resumes by keyword coverage before a recruiter reads them. Optimizing does not mean stuffing — it means mirroring the exact terms from the job description where you have genuine experience, in the right sections, with measurable proof.
Where keywords matter most
ATS scans Skills first, then Experience bullets, then Summary. Place exact terms from the JD in Skills as written: 'PostgreSQL' not 'Postgres' if that is what they wrote, 'Salesforce' not 'CRM' alone.
Weave the same terms into one bullet each with context: 'Built ETL pipelines in Python (pandas) processing 2M rows/day' beats a bare skill list. Our TF-IDF weighting in the ATS checker surfaces rare, high-value terms above generic words.
Mirror without lying
Only include skills you can discuss in an interview. If the JD says 'Figma' and you used 'Sketch', list Sketch and note 'Wireframing (Sketch, Figma basics)' if you have exposure — do not claim expert Figma.
Expand aliases honestly: JS → JavaScript, K8s → Kubernetes are normalized by our synonym map, but list the JD's canonical term explicitly for ATS that do exact match.
