Student Resume With No Experience: What to Put Instead of Jobs

A student resume with no full-time experience is still a resume: one page, education first, then projects, internships, campus jobs, and skills. You do not need to invent a corporate title. FreeResume.me includes one resume and a watermark-free PDF on Free.

Education is the lead section

Put degree, school, expected graduation, and 3–6 courses that match the internship posting. Add GPA only when it helps. Add honors if they are real.

If you have a thesis or capstone, treat it like a job: one title line and two bullets with methods and a result.

Projects need users, data, or a decision

“Built a to-do app following a YouTube video” is weak. “Shipped a scheduling app used by 12 classmates during finals week; reduced double-booking complaints to zero” is a resume line.

Link GitHub only if the repo is readable. One good project beats six empty folders.

Part-time work counts

Retail, food service, tutoring, and research assistant roles teach staffing, cash, and deadlines. Write them with numbers: shifts, students, error rates.

You can keep the job title honest. “Barista” is fine. “Customer experience associate” that hides the café is worse if they will ask.

Templates and next steps

Use a single-column ATS template such as Modern Minimal or Harvard Classic. Avoid photo headers for US internships unless the industry expects it.

FAQs

Can I submit a resume with no jobs?

Yes. Lead with education, projects, and any paid or volunteer work, including campus jobs and caregiving if it is relevant and you want it there.

Should students use two pages?

No. One page. Two pages from a student usually means weak editing.

GPA?

Include if it is 3.5+ and recent. Otherwise skip it and show projects.
