How to Tailor a Resume to a Job Description (Without Lying)

Tailoring a resume means rewriting a small set of bullets and skills so they match one job you can actually do. It is not a new identity. FreeResume.me includes one resume and PDF on Free. Unlimited job-specific versions and ATS scoring are Pro.

Read the posting like a parser and like a person

Parsers look for strings. People look for whether you owned an outcome. You need both: the employer’s tool names in text, and a number that proves you used them.

Ignore fluffy adjectives in the posting. Circle systems, licenses, domain nouns, and seniority words (staff, lead, senior) only if they match you.

Change the headline, not your biography

If your last title was “Associate” and they ask for “Customer Support Specialist,” and that was the work, you may write “Customer Support Specialist (Associate)” or put the target title in the summary. Do not fabricate a promotion.

Reorder bullets so the matching work is first. Hide nothing illegal; simply lead with the overlap.

Use the checker once, then stop

An ATS resume checker scores your resume against a job description for keywords, section order, and parseable formatting. On FreeResume.me you can run one free scan. Unlimited scans and in-builder fixes are Pro.

If you apply to twelve similar roles this week, Pro is the plan that lets you keep named copies. If you apply to one role, the free resume is enough.

Examples by role

See unique examples and formulas on each /resume/[role] page, and the hub at /resume. Do not paste a software engineer sample into a nursing application.

FAQs

Do I need a new resume for every job?

You need a new slice: title line, skills, and a handful of bullets. A fully rewritten life story for each posting is wasted motion.

Is tailoring the same as keyword stuffing?

No. Stuffing adds words you cannot defend. Tailoring reorders true work so the employer’s nouns appear in context.

How does Free vs Pro affect tailoring?

One saved resume is free. Extra tailored copies are Pro.
